DO: The Right Way to Enjoy Cannabis in Missouri

DO: Buy from Licensed Dispensaries Only

Missouri has over 224 licensed dispensaries statewide. Verify any dispensary through the official DCR facility list. All products are 100% Missouri-grown, lab-tested, and tracked through the Metrc seed-to-sale system. Unlicensed sellers cannot guarantee product safety.

DO: Bring a Valid 21+ ID

You must be 21 or older to purchase recreational cannabis. Bring a valid government-issued photo ID — driver's license, state ID, passport, or military ID from any state or country. Dispensaries check ID at entry with no exceptions. There is no residency requirement.

DO: Bring Cash

Cash is the safest payment method at Missouri dispensaries. Many locations accept debit cards, but cash works everywhere. ATMs are available on-site ($3–5 fee). Plan for approximately 6–9% total tax depending on the jurisdiction.

DO: Consume on Private Property

The legal places to consume cannabis in Missouri are private property (with the property owner's permission) and licensed consumption lounges. This includes your own home, a friend's place, cannabis-friendly vacation rentals, or a licensed lounge like Cola in St. Louis.

DO: Use Delivery if Convenient

Missouri allows cannabis delivery to non-residents at any physical address, including hotels and vacation rentals. This is one of the most visitor-friendly delivery policies in legal cannabis. Multiple operators serve the KC and STL metro areas.

DO: Start Low, Go Slow

If you are new to cannabis, start with a low dose: 2.5–5 mg THC for edibles, or one small puff for flower. Edibles can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to take effect. Do not take more because you "don't feel anything yet." Tell your budtender it is your first time. More at TryCannabis.org.

DO: Store Cannabis Securely

Keep cannabis in its original sealed packaging. In a vehicle, store it in the trunk or a closed container outside the passenger area. At home or a rental, keep it out of reach of children and pets, away from heat, and in a secure location.

DO: Tip Your Budtender

Budtenders are knowledgeable professionals who can guide you through the menu. Tipping a few dollars is appreciated, especially if they spend time helping you as a first-timer. Think of it like tipping a bartender.

DO: Enjoy the Low Prices

Missouri has among the lowest cannabis prices in any legal state: $26 average eighth, 6% excise tax plus up to 3% local. If you are coming from Illinois (26-41% tax) or Colorado (15-20%), you will notice the difference immediately.

DON'T: Mistakes That Can Get You in Trouble

DON'T: Consume in Public

Cannabis consumption is prohibited in public places in Missouri. First offense is a civil fine up to $100. This includes streets, parks, sidewalks, parking lots, public transit, and anywhere open to public view. "Stepping outside" is still public consumption.

DON'T: Cross State Lines with Cannabis

Transporting cannabis across state lines is a federal crime — even between Missouri and Illinois, where both states have legalized. This applies to every border: Kansas, Illinois, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, Nebraska, Kentucky, and Tennessee. Consume or dispose of your purchase before leaving Missouri.

DON'T: Fly with Cannabis

All airports are federal property. TSA operates under federal law, where cannabis remains Schedule I. Do not bring cannabis through security at Kansas City International (MCI), St. Louis Lambert (STL), or any other airport.

DON'T: Drive Impaired

Missouri has strict cannabis DUI laws. DWI first offense is a Class B misdemeanor: up to 6 months and $500. Use rideshare services like Uber or Lyft. Do not consume in a moving vehicle, even as a passenger.

DON'T: Assume Hotels Allow Cannabis

Most hotels prohibit cannabis use on property. Smoking or vaping in a hotel room can result in cleaning fees, fines, and removal. Use a consumption lounge or consume at a private residence with permission instead.

DON'T: Buy from Unlicensed Sellers

Unlicensed cannabis is illegal and untested. Missouri's licensed dispensaries sell products tracked through the Metrc system and tested by approved labs. Use only DCR-licensed facilities.

DON'T: Share with Anyone Under 21

Providing cannabis to anyone under 21 is a serious criminal offense. Keep all products secure and out of reach of children and minors.
