Before You Arrive

If this is your first time visiting a cannabis dispensary in Missouri — or anywhere — here is what you need to know before walking through the door:

  • Valid ID required: Government-issued photo ID proving you are 21 or older. Driver's license, passport, or military ID from any state or country.
  • No residency requirement: Out-of-state visitors are welcome at every Missouri dispensary.
  • Bring cash: Many dispensaries accept debit cards, but cash ensures a smooth transaction. ATMs are on-site at most locations.
  • Browse online first: Most Missouri dispensaries post live menus on their websites, so you can review products and prices before visiting.
  • First-timer? Tell your budtender. They are trained to help new consumers find the right product and dose. There is no judgment.

The Check-In Process

  1. Enter the lobby. Most dispensaries have a secured lobby or waiting area separated from the sales floor.
  2. Show your ID. A staff member will verify your age. Some locations scan IDs; others check visually. Your information is not stored.
  3. Medical patients: If you have a Missouri medical card, present it at check-in for your medical pricing and tax exemption.
  4. Proceed to the sales floor. Once verified, you will enter the dispensary floor where products are displayed and budtenders are available to assist.

Shopping the Menu

Missouri dispensaries carry a wide range of products, all 100% Missouri-grown. The state does not permit cannabis imports, which means everything you see was cultivated, manufactured, and tested right here in the Show-Me State.

  • Flower — ~50% of all sales. The core product. Sold by the gram, eighth (3.5g), quarter (7g), half ounce (14g), and ounce (28g). Average eighth: $26.13.
  • Pre-rolls — The fastest-growing category (+10.7% year-over-year). Ready to smoke, no preparation needed. Singles, multi-packs, and infused options.
  • Vape pens & cartridges — Discreet, convenient, battery-powered. Available in 510-thread cartridges and proprietary pod systems.
  • Edibles — Gummies, chocolates, beverages, and more. Start with 5mg THC or less if you are new. Effects take 30 minutes to 2 hours.
  • Concentrates — Wax, shatter, live resin, rosin. High potency. For experienced consumers.
  • Topicals & tinctures — Non-intoxicating topical creams, transdermal patches, and sublingual tinctures.
Start Low, Go Slow

If you are new to cannabis, ask your budtender for a low-dose recommendation. For edibles, start with 2.5–5mg THC and wait at least 2 hours before taking more. For flower, take one small puff and wait 15 minutes. More guidance at TryCannabis.org.

Taxes & Pricing

Missouri has among the lowest cannabis tax rates in the nation, which translates directly to lower shelf prices:

Tax Type Recreational Medical
State excise tax 6% 4%
Local tax (voter-approved) Up to 3% None
Standard sales tax Standard state/local sales tax applies
Effective Rate ~9–15% (varies by jurisdiction) ~4–10%

Among the lowest cannabis tax rates in the nation. Revenue allocation: 1/3 Veterans Commission, 1/3 drug treatment, 1/3 Public Defenders. $255M in 2025 revenue.

For comparison: Illinois charges 26-41%, California 28-38%, and Colorado 15-20%. Missouri's low tax rate is a constitutional feature of Amendment 3 that the legislature cannot change without voter approval.

Payment Methods

  • Cash: Accepted everywhere. The safest and most universal option.
  • Debit cards: Many dispensaries accept PIN debit. Some run transactions as ATM withdrawals with a small fee.
  • ATMs: Available on-site at virtually all dispensaries. Expect a $3–5 surcharge.
  • Credit cards: Generally not accepted due to federal banking restrictions on cannabis businesses.

After Your Purchase

  • Packaging: Products come in sealed, child-resistant, labeled packaging. Keep products in original packaging.
  • Transport: In a vehicle, store cannabis in the trunk or a closed container out of the passenger compartment.
  • Consumption: Legal on private property with permission, or at a licensed consumption lounge. Not in public, not in vehicles.
  • State lines: Cannabis cannot leave Missouri. Not into Kansas, Illinois, Arkansas, or anywhere else.
